Titles are the first elements in your articles and post updates to draw your audience attention. Coming up with a catchy title is great but are you aware how to properly display the words? Which letters should be Majuscules? Which words should be in minuscule?
To make sure your titles are perfectly written, you should cautiously keep up with the formatting options in terms of capitalization and follow the rules set forth below.
This article will also briefly speak about the influence of Capitalization on Search Engine Optimization and whether you should write Upper Cases or Lower cases on your Meta Title and Meta Description.
Sounded on a lot of researches and exchanged professional insights, in web design, Puzl team recommends you to follow The Title Case Method when capitalizing your website content:
Title Case Method
Title Case (also known as Headline Style or Up Style) states that capitalizing a word in a title depends on its part of the speech (whether noun, pronoun, adjective, verb, etc.). It is followed by The Chicago Manual of Style.
When sticking to this method you should:
the first word regardless of the part of speech
the last word regardless of the part of speech
all nouns, pronouns, adgectives, verbs, adverbs and subordonating conjunctions of four letters or more
all articles (a, the)
prepositions (to, at, in, with)
and coordinating conjunctions (and, but, or)
“to” as part of an infinitive
all words of less than four letters
Running a Professional Website Plays a Tremendous Role in the Digital World.
All words are capitalized except:
“a” and “the” since they are articles
“in” since it is a preposition
And this is how Puzl applies the Title Case method:
Page Title: Capitalize all the Words
(e.g. Business Information)
Title: Capitalize all the Words
(e.g. Current Business Information)
Sub Title: Capitalize all the Words
(e.g. Current Business Information)
UNLESS: If used directly below a Title
Section title: Capitalize the first word only
(e.g. Additional company information)
Menus & Buttons: Capitalize all the Words
(e.g. About Us / Our Features / Domain Mapping, etc.)
Meta Title Tag: Capitalize all the Words
(e.g. Free Business Website Builder)
If you want to dig deeper into Capitalization principles on your own, here is another common style guide in use:
Sentence Case Method
Sentence case (also known as Down style) requires that you capitalize:
only the first word of the title
any proper nouns - proper nouns are the names of individual people, places, titles, calendar times, etc.), eg: Mary; John; Paris; The President; Monday.
Everything else is in lowercase. This method is preferred by a number of print and online publications and recommended by the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.
Running a professional website plays a tremendous role in the digital world.
All words are lowercased except “Running”since it is the first word in the title.
Are search engines case sensitive? It is a topic subjected to a number of discussions. In fact it is difficult to define whether one factor does or does not alter your search ranking position. According to some SEO experts , the only benefit that capitalization in the titles brings within Search engines is the ease of readability. However, it is widely accepted that Google treats words and phrases in all-caps with lower priority than those being decently capitalized. The reason is that all-caps sentences are often recognized as lower quality content. Do not underestimate the Human factor. Keeping up the uppercase pattern in your Meta descriptions will make the text more visible and easy to scan for all the people and prospects searching on the web. It will therefore bring more traffic to your site which will automatically reflect on the higher rank in the Search Engines. And this is why Puzl’s SEO experts strongly advise you to use the Capitalization method for your Page Titles (Meta Titles).
Important: These rules are common but not universal. How to handle capitalization is up to you and it’s a matter of personal understanding and style choice. Regardless of which of the methods you might choose, just make sure that once picked up, you will stick with it at all times.
